The Select Board of the Town of Sudbury strongly condemns the recent incidents of antisemitic behavior at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and a Sudbury Public School. We stand with members of our Jewish community and other residents who are dismayed by such incidents. As Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently stated, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.” We believe that when one group in Sudbury is targeted or maligned, the freedom and well-being of our whole community is at risk. Therefore, we will never tolerate antisemitism, racism, harassment, or violence of any kind.
The Select Board is grateful for the leadership demonstrated by our School Administrators and School Committees, Police Chief, and Town Manager in responding to these incidents. Our Board will be reaching out to the New England Chapter of the Anti-Defamation League as well as to local clergy and faith organizations for conversation and partnership. The Select Board’s goal is to identify ways to interrupt acts of antisemitism and other acts of hate and make Sudbury a safe and inclusive community for everyone.

In addition, the Board recently created the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Commission. The DEI is charged with a mission to ”support diversity, achieve equity, and foster inclusion for every member of this community, respecting all aspects of identities.” This Commission of Sudbury residents and advisory members has already begun its important work, and we encourage the public to participate.
We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment in Sudbury based upon mutual trust and respect. Diverse backgrounds and experiences help us learn from one another, develop acceptance and empathy, and provide enrichment throughout our lives.
