Swampscott Winter Storm: Schools Stay Remote Tuesday

While snow totals were minor across much of the North Shore, Swampscott schools went with a remote learning model on Tuesday.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Swampscott Public Schools had early dismissal on Monday a remote learning day on Tuesday after a messy winter storm brought high winds and heavy rain to the immediate coast and huge snow totals just a few miles inland.

While Swampscott did not receive the snow wallop of the rest of the state, the district opted for the remote learning day to help keep staff members who don't live in town safe.

"Tuesday will be a remote learning day for all SPS students due to by concern for faculty and staff who need to commute from harder-hit parts of the state," Swampscott Schools said.

Swampscott Town Hall, the public library and the senior center closed at noon on Monday.

Tuesday's curbside solid waste and recycling pickup in Swampscott will be delayed until Wednesday and the remainder of the week will be in a one-day delay schedule.

A strong Northeast wind caused a massive variance between snow totals along the coast and those just a few miles inland. While the immediate coast on the North and South shores received little, if any, snow, Wilmington was a jackpot town just 15 miles inland with 20 inches.

Most communities in Middlesex, Worcester and inland Essex counties were hit with more than a foot of snow.

The state canceled the "Stop the Spread" free coronavirus testing at Salem's Old Town Hall on Tuesday.
