Dogs Killed By Coyotes in Essex County: How to Prevent Deaths

State wildlife officials are educating residents on how to keep their dogs from being killed by coyotes.

ESSEX COUNTY, MA – After dogs were attacked by coyotes in Gloucester and Peabody, MassWildlife gave a presentation in Gloucester City Hall on how to coexist with the mammals.

The presentation, which is available online, said that attacks on pets range from somewhat bold to very bold, but don't always constitute a threat to public safety. An attack on a leashed pet with a human present is ranked as very bold, and does constitute a threat to public safety.

The dog attacked in Gloucester was leashed, and its owner was inside the house.

Other behaviors that are thought to be threatening to public safety include approaching and closely following people, and not fleeing when heavily harassed, and physically attacking people.

The presentation recommends eliminating sources of feeding for coyotes, both intentional and unintentional. Bird feeders, pet food and garbage that isn't secure, and loose compost can all attract coyotes and develop dangerous behavior.

"Heavy harassment" to scare coyotes off includes loud, offensive noises like air borns, whistles, and pots banging; throwing objects like tennis balls and water balloons; spraying with a hose or water gun; and aggressive body language like making eye contact, refusing to run or turn around, and charging at the animal.

The presentation recommended teaching kids the difference between a coyote and a dog, and if they do encounter a coyote, to make themselves look bigger, and slowly back down.

To keep coyotes away from your property, MassWildlife suggested removing hiding places for both coyotes and their prey by cutting back brushy areas, removing brush, and disturbing or eliminating den sites.

Fences at least 6 feet high can also keep coyotes off properties. Livestock and pets can be protected with electric fencing, keeping house cats indoors, and closely supervising all animals.
