The state Department of Environmental Protection on Monday issued an air quality alert for Essex County because of high ozone levels due to the heat and humidity. Those with respiratory issues, children and seniors should be careful not to exert themselves outside and drink plenty of fluids.

Residents are also reminded that pavement temperatures reached at high as 117 degrees in the sun on Monday — so be careful to take pets on short walks, and walk in the shade or on grass, if possible.
