Local Teen Overcomes Obstacles To Support Children's Hospital

Walking 6 miles is easy for some, but Fiona Hyland had to defeat a congenital deformity first.

LYNN, MA – Fiona Hyland will walk 6 miles in support of the hospital that healed her this Sunday. Hyland was diagnosed with bilateral clubfoot in 2007, and had to endure multiple castings, surgery, and braces before gaining the ability to walk.

Bilateral clubfoot is a defect that twists the foot out of shape or position, making walking difficult and sometimes impossible, according to the Mayo Clinic.

On Sunday, June 11, Hyland will walk in the 15th annual Eversource Walk for Boston Children's Hospital with nearly 5,000 walkers to help fund care and research at Boston Children's Hospital.

"Because of Boston Children’s, I can run, skip, dance, and swim," said Hyland. "I owe so much to the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at this hospital." Hyland's experience at Boston Children's inspired her to dream of becoming a pediatric orthopedic surgeon for the same hospital that helped her.

The walk is Boston Children's largest participatory fundraiser, and has raised over $17.5 million since its inception. This year, the walk has already raised more than half of its goal of $1.8 million.
