Student Parties Keep Swampscott High In Remote Learning
School officials said about 50 students were unmasked and not socially distanced during the two New Year's Eve parties.
SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Swampscott High School will remain in a remote learning model through the end of this week after the district learned of two parties that about 50 students attended on New Year's Eve.
Swampscott High Principal Dennis Kohut said in a letter to parents that that inability to contact trace from the parties left the district no other way to minimize the spread of any coronavirus contraction than to remain remote through the week. He told parents the district learned students were unmasked and did not socially distance during the party.
Swampscott High went remote along with the rest of the district schools before the winter break due to rising rates in the town and across the region.

Peabody High also remained remote this week because of the number of student and staff positive cases, and staff quarantine protocols. Peabody Schools also blamed social gatherings and household spread, not in-classroom education, for the community transmission.
Swampscott was one of several North Shore schools that suspended winter athletics due to rising coronavirus rates and the indoor nature of winter sports. They returned to practice late last week, but are now on hold again until Jan. 16.
