Swampscott Looks To Keep Christmas Spirit Shining Bright In 2021

Town requests those with holiday outdoor light displays keep them illuminated through January to keep things festive during the dark winter.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA —Swampscott residents are encouraged to deck the halls well into 2021 as a way to keep spirits bright amid what could be a dark winter of cold weather and coronavirus restrictions.

Swampscott officials said its unofficial "May the lights keep shining!" campaign is designed to lift everyone's spirits during this time.

"We would like to encourage everyone to keep their holiday light displays illuminated through January 31," the town posted. "Keep the light shining!"

The town is looking to spread the message to neighbors and other residents.

The message applies to outdoor light displays and indoor displays that do not include live trees, which are unlikely to make it through the month and pose a fire hazard if they dry out.

Curbside collection of trees in Swampscott will be one week only starting Jan. 10.

Trees should be placed outside by 7 a.m. on the morning of residents' normal trash collection and should have all ornaments and lights removed. Trees are brought directly to the chipper for recycling.
