Swampscott Superintendent Warns Parents Of New App
A new app challenges users to increasingly dangerous acts.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA – Swampscott Superintendent Pamela R.H. Angelakis warned parents last week of a new app with potentially dangerous consequences.
In a blog post last week, Angelakis wrote that colleagues warned her about The Blue Whale Challenge, an app geared toward preteens that challenges users to tasks like watching a scary video and – at its most twisted – committing suicide.
Angelakis encouraged parents to ask their kids if there are any new games or challenges that they and their friends are hearing about or playing on social media, and search for the #BlueWhaleChallenge hashtag or photos of a blue whale on their kids' social media accounts.
