Today, Jan. 1: Storm Prep and Plunge

Happy New Year, Swampscott.

Swampscott starts 2014 with a splash. And a scream.

That's because the Polar Bear Plunge is today, Jan. 1, at 11 a.m. — right about high tide — at Fisherman's Beach. Registration starts at 10:15 a.m.

The air temp should be in the 20s and the water temp about 40.

The Plunge, brought to you by the Swampscott Yacht Club, will benefit the Swampscott Public Library and The Haven Project.

Meanwhile, the town looks for a possible snowstorm on Thursday and into Friday.

Students head back to school Thursday. We will be in touch with officials about any delays or cancellations and post them on the Patch.

DPW Director Gino Cresta said the town took delivery of three loads of salt on Tuesday. That's a little more than 100 tons.

Trucks are outfitted with their snowplows and the crews are ready.
