Unemployment Rate Climbs in Swampscott Over the Last Year

The percentage of unemployed people grew in Swampscott in the last year though the percentage is still lower than the state's unemployment rate.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development recently released their June unemployment stats for counties and towns throughout the state, including Swampscott. 

Swampscott saw an increase in unemployment from May to June of this year, as well as from June 2012 to June of this year. 

Unemployment rose almost a full percentage point in town from 5.4 percent in June of 2012 to 6.3 percent this past June. Unemployment was 5.6 percent in May of this year.

As of June, there were 489 Swampscott residents without jobs, out of the 7,758 total labor force in Swampscott. The labor force in Swampscott, which is the total number of employable individuals, increased by 64 workers in June of 2013 compared to a year earlier. 

Statewide, unemployment was up in June as well as year-to-date. June unemployment throughout the state rose by 0.7 of a percent to 7.4 percent this past June. Statewide unemployment over the year jumped up by 0.5 percent to 6.9 percent.
