Updated: Young Swampscott Triathletes Train and Compete

781 athletes from throughout the region completed the New England Youth Triathlon.

Swampscott Middle School was well represented at the New England Kids Triathlon held at MIT.

Ten Swampscott students were scheduled to swim, bike and run the weekend of July 21. And, as part of the festivities, they were introduced during the pep rally and got to meet members of the New England Patriots.

A lot of training went into the event.

The preparation started after school health and wellness teacher Jan Rushton invited Kevin Reen, an accomplished and determined triathlete, to talk to hundreds of students back in late May.

The school wellness teacher wants to establish an enduring triathlon program for students, teaching them discipline, perseverance and self awareness.

Among the Swampscott Middle School team triathletes were Brianna Grube and Codi Butt.

In preparation for the event, Brianna ran the tracks of Swampscott, swam at Fisherman's Beach  and the YMCA in Marblehead and biked roads around Swampscott, her coach said.

Biking was the most difficult because there are no bike paths or road markers for bicycles. Brianna will continue competing in local events within Massachusetts.

Brianna will be attending high school in fall.

Codi Butt is the 6th grade captain for next year's triathlon team.
She trained with her parents in Maine, biking back roads, swimming cool ponds and running trails, her coach said.

Codi hopes to enter more triathlons throughout the school year and will be recruiting her brother and local neighborhood friends, her coach said.

Codi is a true mentor for Swampscott Middle School athletes, her coach said.
