Tewksbury Writing Group ON ZOOM (*RR)

Tuesday, January 19, 7pm

Are you a writer -- or an aspiring writer -- looking for some support? The new Tewksbury Writing Group, which generally meets the third Tuesday evening of every month, is open to everyone who's interested in writing -- all genres, all skill levels. Each meeting -- which will take place via Zoom -- consists of some conversation, followed by a guest speaker (typically a published author) offering some tips of the trade, followed by a period of reading & friendly critiquing via breakout sessions. (In the breakout sessions, authors of like genres will be grouped together.) This month's guest speaker is TBD. The group is facilitated by author Dale T. Phillips, who has published novels, story collections, non-fiction, and over 70 short stories. Stephen King was Dale's college writing teacher, and since then, Dale has found time to appear on stage, television, radio, in an independent feature film, and compete on Jeopardy (losing in a spectacular fashion). He's a member of the Mystery Writers of America and the Sisters in Crime. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Norman Rockwell: Inclusion, Exclusion & Evolving Views On Race ON ZOOM (*RR)

Thursday, January 21, 7pm

Join longtime art educator, Jane Oneail, for a Zoom webinar focused on the art of Norman Rockwell. Rockwell is heralded for depicting and defining American life. He often captured bittersweet images of people experiencing universal and relatable feelings of being left out or left behind. Yet, as an artist working in the 20th century, his works are curiously devoid of America’s rich cultural and racial diversity. Toward the end of his career, Rockwell painted several poignant works about race in America that can be seen as an extension of his earlier sense of the power of inclusion and exclusion. Jane Oneail, owner of Culturally Curious, holds a Master’s in Art History from Boston University and a Master’s in Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She is a New Hampshire native and has worked at some of the state’s most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. This program is a collaboration of Memorial Hall Library, Stevens Memorial Library, and Tewksbury Public Library, Merrimack Valley Libraries Working Towards Social Justice.

ARMCHAIR TRAVEL: Antarctica – Travels At The End Of The World ON ZOOM (*RR)

Saturday, January 23, 10:30am

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, driest place on earth. Two-thirds of all our planet’s fresh water is locked up there in the form of ice in a continent twice the size of Australia. The last continent to be understood, it is a harsh and unforgiving environment that challenged and took the lives of many early explorers. Although an ice sheet covers 99 percent of the land, the exposed areas along the coast nourish a wealth of tiny plants and sea creatures which in turn support the world’s greatest concentrations of wildlife in the sea, on land, and in the air. The lecturer, Barry Pell, traveled by ship to Antarctica for two weeks. Based on his travels on the sea and excursions onto the land, he will discuss and show his photography of this most magnificent and unique continent. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
