Fake Market Basket Facebook Page Asking For Sensitive Information
The grocery store chain warned on Facebook that a fake page was friending its customers and soliciting personal information.

TEWKSBURY, MA — Market Basket is warning about a fake Facebook page that is sending customers friend requests and asking for personal information.
The Tewksbury-based grocery store chain is currently running a giveaway of fitness equipment and gift cards. The fake page has taken advantage of the Drink Up, Work Out giveaway, contacting participants and asking for information.
"This page has been sending friend requests to our customers and has been asking for sensitive information as a requirement to enter our Drink Up, Work Out giveaway," the company said on Facebook. "Please be advised that facebook.com/marketbasket is our only Facebook page."

The chain noted that it does not send friend requests to customers, so any friend request from a profile posing as Market Basket is not legitimate.
"Market Basket will never request payment information online, and we ask our community to be vigilant and to not provide this information to other Facebook pages," the company said.

The real page was not hacked, Market Basket explained in a comment. Instead, a new profile was created using the Market Basket name and logo.
"Our team has reached out to Facebook and we are trying to get the unauthorized Facebook page taken down," the store said.
Market Basket has contacted Facebook about getting a verification badge for its real page, it said in another comment.
