UPDATED: Freight Train Derails in Tewksbury

Three cars involved were carrying carbon dioxide, prompting a hazmat response.

TEWKSBURY, MA - Police and fire crews are on the scene of a train derailment near 1600 Shawsheen St. Friday afternoon.

A freight train derailed in the area just after 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. Three railroad cars involved in the derailment were carrying carbon which prompted a Tier 1 hazmat response.

Just after 1:30 p.m. Friday, Tewksbury Fire officials say train workers are working to return the derailed cars to the tracks and that there is no damage or leaks due to the incident.

Reports from the scene say all cars are upright, just off the tracks.

There is no word yet on any injuries or which direction the train was heading when it derailed.
