Boys Track
Tewksbury 78, Billerica 66
Even a glitch in the lineup couldn't stop the Tewksbury High boys track team from running over border rival Billerica, 78-66.
"I preach to the guys on the track team in order to be men, you have to own up to your mistakes and make no excuses. Â I made some mistakes in the line-up and it could have costed us," admitted Coach Bill Meuse. "But like any good team, our athletes rallied behind me today and did their part to be able to overcome the flaws. I am so proud of this team because of the way they competed today. Â I absolutely love the make up of this team, They pick up each other and even the coaching staff when needed."
Much like Hollywood in the 1980s, the Tewksbury boys track team has two stars named Cory shining brightly. But unlike the Haim and Feldmen, Tewksbury's Corys show no signs of crashing and burning.
Against Billerica, the Corys combined to win four events. Cory Thomas did the virtually unthinkable by winning both the two mile and mile against strong competiton.
"Both Corys are two of the best athletes I have seen come through this track program," said Meuse. "I know its tough because we do not have a home track but people should really come out to not only see these two kids but also our entire track program. We have and always had something great going on here, these athletes should be recognized."
Kevin Jones was also a force for the Redmen, winning the high jump (6-0) and the long jump and placing second in the high hurdles. Roy Felix turned in a strong race to win the 400. Christian Taylor took first in the discus and was third in the shot put. John Fiorello was first in the javelin and second in the shot. Andrew Nguyen was first in the pole vault.
"Blake Hery also had a huge race for us in the 400 hurdles, he earned us a big second place to clinch the meet," said Meuse. "He is one of the hardest working kids i have ever seen. I am just so happy for him because he deserves this success and he will only keep on improving."
