Rev. Chism's Weekly Message

Think about these things

"Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." - Philippians 4:8

These words from Paul were written in prison. The apostle was pivotal in planting churches during those days. I could imagine those he encouraged and shared the gospel would be riddled with anxiety. They were possibly thinking it could happen to them. But also maybe they were so proud of Paul for standing up for what he believed even in the anxiety they had.

Across the world the words Paul wrote are debated over and over. It really is kind of an annoyance to me that so many would cherry pick his words. What many forget, in my opinion, was Paul was one of the first followers of Christ to pen what the good news Christ shared means. Like many still today, he was trying to relay what Jesus did. Paul was divinely inspired and so are we when we seek to understand and grow closer to God.

If there is one thing we could celebrate about Paul is his perseverance. He went through a lot in his travels yet he still shared words of encouragement in anxious times for our spiritual ancestors.

So what are you anxious about today? The pandemic? The elections? Your health? Family? The community? Your church? Or everything?

Paul shared with us the things he thought about in tough times. Truth, being honorable, justice, purity from immorality, things that are pleasing to God, and praise. He summed all these as "excellence." Let's challenge one another to think about these things today. This is easier said than done but let's give it a try. God is always helping us.

Please fill in the black. I am anxious about _________ today.

Now take one of the ways Paul shares to handle anxiety (or more if you would like). Pray to God for guidance and let God know how you are going to move forward. Keep mental thoughts or a journal of the next days and ongoing weeks go. One day in the future go back to your first thought or journal entry and compare to where you are today.

I'm praying for you. Please pray for me. We are persevering through these times. But it doesn't have to be a prison to us. There are so many things to rejoice about in life.

Stay Safe,

Rev. Baxter
