Tewksbury DECA Students Headed to National Conference

DECA students set up GoFundMe account to raise $5,000 to defray travel costs.

TEWKSBURY -- The Tewksbury Memorial High School DECA chapter has created a GoFundMe account to raise $5,000 to send eight of its members to compete in the National DECA Conference in California at the end of the month.

The eight team members have earned spots to compete against the brightest young business minds from all 50 states, Canada, and China in their respective events. The Tewksbury students will leave on April 25 to travel to Anaheim, CA and return on April 30.

The money will help defray the costs of airfare, hotels, registration fees, and more.

DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is a non-profit organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Under the tutelage of advisor Jim Sullivan, Tewksbury DECA raised over $12,000 for the Meghan McCarthy Research Fund through its annual fashion show. Tewksbury DECA has volunteered their efforts to support local businesses through the annual Taste of Tewksbury held at the Tewksbury Country Club and has provided help in organizing local 5K road races.

At the district and state conferences, its members have won awards and qualified for higher level competition in areas including Business Administration, Buying and Merchandising, and Finance. All members traveling to California have devoted countless hours to improving themselves and the community around them.

The students competing are: Akhil Bagul, Abby Cook,Patrick Hunt, Sam Surowiec, Matthew McLaughlin, Stephen Long, Kaitlyn DiNapoli and Sammi LaLon.
