Tewksbury Kmart to Close

Sears Holdings announced Thursday the list of stores nationwide slated for closure. Tewksbury's Kmart is the only closure expected in MA.

TEWKSBURY, MA - Sears Holdings announced Thursday the closure of 68 Kmart and 10 Sears stores this summer, including the Kmart location in Tewksbury.

The list of stores slated for closure follows last February's company announcement that nonprofitable locations would be shuttered.

The Kmart in Tewksbury, located at 10 Main St., is the only location in Massachusetts slated for closure.

In a statement issued Thursday, Sears Holdings Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Edward S. Lampert said eligible employees impacted by the store closures will receive severance and be able to apply for open positions at other area stores.

The Kmart location in Tewksbury has had a long history. It was originally a Kmart, then in 2005 became a Sears Essential store, before becoming Kmart once again in 2011.

The decision to bring Kmart back in 2011, as Tewksbury Patch reported, was driven by Tewksbury customers, according to a company spokesman.

Locations slated for closure are expected to begin liquidation sales in late April and early May.
