Kelly Beats Incumbent Panilaitis for Tewksbury Selectman

Override passes for New Center Fire Station, but voters reject Improvements to DPW facility and Town Center Master Plan.

TEWKSBURY - In the 2017 Annual Town Election on Saturday,Jay Kelly edged out incumbent Bruce Panilaitisfor a seat on the Board of Selectman and Jeremiah "Jay'' Delaney narrowly beat Joseph Cobuccio for a seat on the Planning Board,The Sun reports.

In the Board of Selectman race challenger Kelly garnered 1,484 votes to Panilaitis' 779 votes, based on unofficial election results.

The Planning Board race was decided by only 20 votes, based on preliminary results. Delaney earned a narrow victory with 986 votes compared to Cobuccio's 966 votes,

In the three override questions, the new Center Fire Station passed with 1,347 yes votes to 928 no votes, while the overrides for improvements to the DPW facility and the completion of the Town Center Master Plan failed to pass.

The new Center Fire Station project is expected to cost about $15 million, adding about $101 to the average homeowner's tax bill for the next 20 years, The Sun reports.

Voters rejected a $11.4 million override or $77 more on a homeowner's tax bill for the next 20 years. The other override that failed called for the Town Center Master Plan which was estimated at $5 million or an extra $52 on the tax bill for the next two decades.

In unopposed races: Keith M. Sullivan won a three-year seat on the School Committee. Other unopposed positions were: Charles J. Roux, Board of Health (three-year term); Robert G. Scarano, Board of Health (one-year, unexpired term); and Jayne E.W. Miller for Moderator (three-year term).

Two seats on the Library Trustees were won by Lorraine H. Carriere and Patrick J. Joyce, both incumbents.
