MWRA Asks Residents Not to Swim in Fells

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is asking area residents not to swim in the High Fells Reservoir in Stoneham.

While they understand that people are looking to beat the heat by going to the local swimming hole, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is asking area residents not to use the High Fells Reservoir in Stoneham as a swimming location.

For many reasons, the MWRA says that swimming in that body of water is illegal, dangerous and possibly and public health hazard, as it could be used for drinking water in the case of a drought.

"The MWRA recognizes that the Fells is a valued recreational resource in the area and has worked closely with local communities over the years to maintain a balanced use of this beautiful site that allows accessibility while protecting the public water supply. Illegal swimming has resulted in vandalism, damage to fencing, trash left at the reservoir and fires," read a statement by the MWRA.
