Wakefield Public Schools 2016-2017: Details About the New Curriculum

The first full day of school is September 7. Check out these changes in the English and Math curriculums.

WAKEFIELD, MA — Wakefield Public Schools shared a note on Facebook Thursday detailing changes to the 2016-2017 curriculum. There will be a new English Language Arts curriculum in grades 5-12, and a new Mathematics curriculum in grades 7 and 8.

Students and teachers will be given access to digital text books and ancillary materials to "support, engage and challenge students at all levels," according to a letter from Assistant Superintendent Douglas J. Lyons, sent to parents earlier this summer.

Wakefield Schools took steps to ensure that the new math and ELA curricular materials matched up with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for English Language and Mathematics. The letter from Lyons doesn't get into the specifics of each program, outlining them in general terms.

Lyons describes the new Ready Gen and My Perspectives - English Language Arts programs (for grades 5-12) as being a "blended print and digitally integrated program that support students learning to read, write and develop their language skills."

More information about the My Perspectives program can be found on the website of Pearson, a company that sells the "digital courseware" used in the program.

The EnVision Math program curriculum (for grades 7 and 8) is also sold by Pearson and will "allow teachers to create consistency for students as they move from grade to grade," according to Lyons.
