Why Were Fighter Jets Flying Overhead?

The F-15s were not practicing for a flyover at any Red Sox games, as some thought. They served a far greater purpose Friday.

WAKEFIELD, MA — Social media was abuzz with the question Friday: What's up with the fighter jets overhead?

Some thought it was practice for Red Sox games over Memorial Day weekend.

But according to Massachusetts Fallen Heroes, the flyover was part of a rededication of the group's memorial in the Seaport.

The memorial and 50-foot Beacon of Honor remember those who have fallen in the war on terror since Sept. 11, 2001. Friday is the five-year anniversary of the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial.

The group said the names of the 272 from Massachusetts who died in service are etched on site.
