Rainfall records for Sept. 30 were broken throughout New England on Wednesday.

Rain fell in record amounts throughout New England on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

  • Boston, as of 6:31 p.m. Wednesday had 2.46 inches of rain on Wednesday, breaking the previous record of 1.26 inches back in 1899.
  • Worcester saw 2.39 inches on Wednesday. The previous record was 2.17 inches in 1946.
  • Providence, RI had 2.02 inches Wednesday beating the previous record of 0.95 in 1946.

The National Weather Service reported these rainfall totals as of 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. The rainfall totals are unofficial reports by spotters in the following communities for a seven-hour period.

Meanwhile, the region could see more rain depending on the track of Hurricane Joaquin. The track of the hurricane will dictate the extent of rainfall and coastal winds for late Sunday into Monday, according to forecasters. Additonal heavy rainfall and strong wind is possible if Joaquin tracks close enough to southern New England.
