Obituary: Betty Connor, 86

The Walpole resident with many ties to Wrentham passed away March 22.

Betty Ann Connor, of Walpole and loved by many in Wrentham, died peacefully in her sleep on March 22 at the age of 86. Born in Franklin, Pennsylvania and raised in Conemaugh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Rose (Rish) Sewak, and the loving wife of Norman W. Connor of Walpole. She is survived by her two children: James R. Connor of Washington, D.C. and Linda R. Lacke and her husband, Tony, of Wrentham, and four grandchildren: Kevin and Marie Lacke and Christine and Kelsey Connor.Betty was always active in her community. As a young adult, she worked in the USO as a hostess. When her children were very young, she coordinated an effort to establish the first library in the F.D. Roosevelt Elementary School in Hyde Park.

Betty became known for her fun, educational, and innovative trips and projects as a Walpole Girl Scout leader. She helped establish a parent group at West Junior High School in Walpole and was an active volunteer in many local political campaigns. Later she established a walking club at the Walpole Senior Center, a new initiative for seniors at the time. Betty was a member, and later president, of the Franklin chapter of Sweet Adelines International where she sang, laughed and traveled extensively. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Wrentham. The Wrentham Senior Center became a second home for Betty, where she participated in countless programs and events and made many dear and cherished friendships.

Betty’s passions included gardening, reading, cooking, and the arts. She also was an enthusiastic football fan, and a sharp card-player. However, her greatest love and joy was her family, who will miss her dearly. She also will be missed greatly by her little fur-buddy, Shadow.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 4 to 7 PM on Friday, April 6 at the RJ Ross Funeral Home, 135 South Street, Wrentham. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, April 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 130 South Street, Wrentham. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to “Friends of Wrentham Seniors,” c/o Wrentham Council on Aging, 400 Taunton Street, Wrentham, MA 02093.
