A September 19, 2017 essay on Kate's website explains the book's mission:

MOST DIFFICULT TIME OF MY LIFE
WHEN MY SON CHRISTOPHER JOHN GENOVESE β€œGENO” DIED OF AN ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE,
I FELT MY WORLD WOULD END. ALTHOUGH HE WAS 30 YEARS OLD WE STILL HUNG OUT TOGETHER DURING GOOD AND NOT SO GOOD TIMES. BY THAT I MEAN HE WOULD GO OFF THE WAGON AND TAKE PERCOCETS AT FIRST BECAUSE THE PAIN IN HIS BODY, MIND AND HEART WAS TOO MUCH TO HANDLE. NEEDLESS TO SAY HE WAS IN AND OUT OF SOBRIETY.
MY HUSBAND AND I TRIED TO HELP HIM. I WENT TO ALANON, A SUPPORT GROUP FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF A SUBSTANCE ABUSER (DRUGS OR ALCOHOL) AND IT HELPED. I WOULD HEAR POWERFUL STATEMENTS SUCH AS β€˜IF YOU BABY THEM YOU BURY THEM’
β€˜PRACTICE TOUGH LOVE’ β€˜IT’S OK TO THROW THE ADDICT OUT OF YOUR HOUSE’
β€˜IT IS OK TO LET THEM CRASH IN YOUR HOME FOR A FEW DAYS, TEMPORARILY”
GARY AND I DID ALL THOSE THINGS BUT WE GOT EMOTIONALLY DRAINED AND WOULD GIVE IN, FEED HIM, LET HIM BORROW THE CAR, WE WERE AS SICK AS HIM SOMETIMES- THAT’S WHY IT IS CALLED A FAMILY ILLNESS.
TODAY HE IS DEAD. HE HAS BEEN GONE FOR OVER A YEAR AND MY HEART STILL ACHES AND YEARNS FOR HIS EARTHLY EXISTENCE- BUT HE IS GONE.
I WANT TO HELP AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO FIGHT THIS DISEASE IF THEY HAVE IT.
