Like so many other left-wing theories that survive mountains of conflicting evidence, current Democratic attacks on the USPS and the President are in defiance of the facts. The U.S. House of Representatives just voted 257 to 150 to provide $25 billion to the USPS in βcorona virus relief.β Earlier this year, Congress allocated $10 billion in loan authority to the USPS. To date the extra $10 billion has not been used.
Several state legislatures, including Democrats on Beacon Hill, have enacted mail-in-voting laws that contain short deadlines for requesting and returning ballots. These laws have placed sudden, unexpected timing and security burdens on the U. S. Postal Service. Thatβs right β timing and security burdens β not a volume burden. The USPS handles more than 400 million pieces of mail daily, more than the population.
Did Democratic lawmakers in Congress or on Beacon Hill consult with the USPS first? Of course not! Why ask first, when the answer would prevent political posturing? To Democratic lawmakers and Katherine Clark, who now attack the President and the USPS, facts are not important. Reality is optional to Katherine Clark! Whether the USPS can securely handle new short deadlines is not important to Democrats. Creating the appearance of turmoil is a political opportunity to advance a political agenda between now and November 3rd.

I spent over 25 years in the USPS leading teams of great employees. Many of those in Post Offices right here in the Fifth Congressional district. The Post Office lost a whopping $70 billion since 2007. This is a complete departure from the USPSβs historic break-even business model β which Americans have supported since the USPS was created as an independent agency in 1971.
Whatβs actually wrong at the USPS β (i) interference with operational improvements, (ii) unfunded mandates, and (iii) obstruction of badly needed reforms β by Congress. The current hysteria coming from Katherine Clark and the Democrats about the USPS is truly breathtaking β pure and utter nonsense.
I was at the USPS for 9/11; I was there for the Anthrax scares; I was there during the Boston Marathon Bombings; I was there to see automation take off; I was there throughout the internet explosion. I saw dedicated people work through it all.

Katherine Clark doesnβt have the political courage to think of the long-term viability of the USPS, its workers, and customers who rely on the USPS for essential items. As your next Congresswoman, I will work to fix the USPS instead of launching more unsupported political attacks.
