βThis is a great example of the great public safety partnership that exists between the Malden Police Department and Middlesex County Sheriffβs Office under the great leadership of Sheriff Koutoujian,β said Chief Molis.Β Β βHis willingness to provide these resources greatly enhances our lifesaving mission of protecting and serving. We are grateful for this opportunity to participate in training that is realistic and very relevant to the variety of situations that the police respond to.β

Officers participated in scenarios which placed an emphasis on de-escalation techniques and use of less lethal force.Β Β The scenarios included domestic disturbances, traffic stops and situations where mental health was a primary or underlying factor.Β Β The MTC allows officers to go through the scenarios and immediately debrief and receive one-on-one feedback from MPD instructors and MSO deputies.Β
βThe scenarios available on the MTC place officers in realistic situations that require them to draw from their training and experience including their communication and de-escalation skills,β said Sheriff Koutoujian. βWe are proud to once again be working with Chief Molis and Malden Police Department to make this important training available.β
The MTC was purchased by the Middlesex Sheriffβs Office with federal grant funds in 2010.Β Β In 2020, more than 875 officers participated in trainings in the MTC.Β Β To date this year, the MTC has already been used by over 400 municipal officers from agencies including the Arlington, Medford and Stoneham Police Departments.
Malden PD is scheduled to train again in the MTC later this year.
