Wellesley Boater Drowned After Canoe Capsized

The boater was missing for an hour before rescue crews found him several yards offshore.

WELLESLEY, MA — A Wellesley boater who went missing on Labor Day was found and pronounced dead. The man, who has not been identified, was in a canoe on Longfellow Pond when the boat capsized.

The man was canoeing with a woman around 4 p.m. when the boat capsized — Wellesley police said the woman was able to make it to shore but the man was missing for about an hour. Rescue teams found the man 10 yards off shore around 5:20 p.m. — police said he was unconscious and unresponsive.

Paramedics rushed the man to Newton-Wellesley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The incident is under investigation, but does not appear suspicious, Wellesley police said.
