Pilecki Sworn In As Next Wellesley Chief of Police

Jack Pilecki has served as Deputy Chief of Police since 2013. Chief Cunningham retires Sunday.

WELLESLEY, MA — After what we can only assume will be another Patriots Super Bowl victory, the Wellesley Police Department's new MVP will take the field.

Deputy Chief F. Jack Pilecki has been named the new Wellesley Chief of Police, as Chief Terrence Cunningham retires. Cunningham's last day at the Wellesley Police Department is Feb. 5, aka Super Bowl Sunday. Deputy Chief Pilecki takes over the next day.

He was sworn in as chief Monday night at Wellesley Town Hall, where Gov. Charlie Baker stopped by to offer his congratulations.

According to the WPD, Pilecki is a 34-year veteran of the Wellesley Police Department, first appointed to the department in July of 1983. He served as a patrolman until 1992, when he was appointed as the department’s court prosecutor, acting as a liaison between the Wellesley Police Department and the Dedham District Court.

He was promoted to sergeant in 1997, and achieved the rank of lieutenant in 2001. In that role, Pilecki commanded the entire patrol division as well as the Emergency Communication Center.

In 2013, Pilecki was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief, after the WPD's previous Deputy Police Chief William Brooks III left to become the new Norwood Police Chief.

As Deputy Chief, Pilecki oversaw the department's day-to-day operations, as well as large scale events and incidents, the police department said. Only one month after that promotion, the Boston Marathon bombers struck.

According to the police department, Pilecki implemented much of the changes that occurred to Boston Marathon security in Wellesley in the aftermath, a significant task, that required coordinating with many other local, state, and federal agencies during the transition.

Pilecki also currently serves as the chair of the Wellesley Traffic Committee, a collaborative group comprised of town departments that solves long term traffic issues within the town.

He will become Wellesley’s ninth Chief of Police since the department's inception in 1893.

At his swearing in Monday, the police department said, "Most of the members of the Wellesley Police Department attended the swearing in ceremony. Chief Pilecki and Chief Cunningham addressed the department on the Town Hall steps following the official swearing in process. The department then saluted both Chief Cunningham and Chief Pilecki."
