Prayer Vigils and Services: Response to the Boston Marathon Bombings

Constantly updated: how and where you can join in prayerful response to Monday's carnage at the Boston Marathon finish line. And if it's not listed here, add your own.

 

For some, a prayer vigil or service is a way to gather with others and spiritually support the bombing victims, the city of Boston — even the perpetrator/s. 

For others, it is a way to seek answers — or peace, in the face of unsettling evil.

Patch is gathering a list of all the prayer services and vigils in response to the Boston Marathon bombings. Below is a list of vigils and services being held and open to the public; we will be adding to it all day. If we don't have it listed here, please add your own to the comment section below:

Acton: 

Where: First Parish Church of Stow & Acton, 353 Great Road at the intersection of routes 117 and 62, next to the Randall Library 

When: 6:30 p.m. Thursday

What: Vigil service of candle lighting, sharing, meditation and prayer remembering those killed and injured at the Marathon. This will be an opportunity for people to come together and share their fears, their pain and their hopes.  All are welcome.

Boston:

Where: Corner of Berkeley and Boylston Streets by the make-shift shrine on the barriers at that end of Boylston

What: Trinity Church, still locked out of its Copley Square building, will be gathering for prayers for peace


Where: Cathedral of Holy Cross in the South End

What: Interfaith service vigil; President Obama will participate


Where: St. Anthony Shrine & Ministry Center, 100 Arch Street

When: 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 19

What: Interfaith Prayer Service to thank first responders for their unselfish, courageous and compassionate care for the victims, as well as help heal the spiritual wounds of all. Open to everyone.

What: Shabbat service conducted by Rabbi Abramson and Cantorial Soloist Ben Silver will contain prayers and reflections on this tragedy

Chestnut Hill:

Where: St. Ignatius Church, located on the edge of the Boston College campus at 28 Commonwealth Ave.

When: 5 p.m. Tuesday

What: A "Mass of Healing and Hope;" all members of the BC communtiy are invited. University President William P. Leahy will celebrate the mass and a sacramental anointing for healing will follow the service.

Charlestown:

Where: Eden Street Park

When: 8 p.m. Wednesday

Framingham:

Where: On the steps of the Memorial Building, 150 Concord St.

What: Town-wide vigil to honor and remember the deceased and injured spectators and runners of the 117th running of the Boston Marathon.  Also to recognize and honor all the police/fire/EMS and civilians who ran into the chaos to help render immediate medical attention and help save lives. All are invited to come together as a community and show support for the victims of Monday’s tragic events.

Hingham:

Where: South Shore Baptist Church

When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday

What: “Prayer for Boston;” anyone is welcome to attend to pay tribute to Monday's victims and their families.
