These insects may carry diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or West Nile Virus (WNV). Recently a mosquito pool in Needham tested positive for West Nile Virus.
While Wellesley is currently at a low-risk level for mosquito borne illnesses, the Health Department is encouraging residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites when outdoors.

Recommended steps include:
- Using an insect repellent with an EPA registered active ingredient such as DEET;
- Limiting time outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active;
- Wearing long pants and long shirts whenever possible when venturing outdoors;
- Rescheduling activities planned for dawn or dusk to different times when mosquitoes are less active;
- Avoiding areas known to have a high mosquito population;
- Removing standing water from around your home.
