Candy for our troops

Halloween candy - Written by: Mahitha Yerabothu

From the last few years the kids of Graniteville Woods, a community in Westford MA, have been donating their Halloween candy to the troops stationed in the Middle East. As we all know, the American troops work very hard to protect our country and this small act of gratitude is our way of thanking them for all that they have done to our country.

The kids of Graniteville Woods School also made cards expressing their appreciation to the troops and their service. Tejal Joshi, a resident of Graniteville Woods organized and helped the kids do this. GVW School is a non-profit organization that teaches kids skills and values that will be useful later in the life.

This year the kids collected 90 pounds of candies, chocolates, and treats and in the previous years, they had collected 30 and 75 pounds. This event was initiated by Ushma Mehta of Graniteville Woods in collaboration with Radhika Goli a resident of Westford who is also an organizer of the program. The Halloween candies were put into care packages along with other supplies and will be sent to the troops in the Middle East to give them a moment of happiness in their hard and stressful lives.

This small act of kindness is the kid's way of thanking the troops for their service and sacrifice towards the country. Most of the troops that are stationed in foreign countries don't get to come home for holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas and this is a small way to cheer them up and remind them that we will always be thankful to them.

The residents of Graniteville Woods will continue to participate in programs like these in the future.
