Wife Tries to Cover For Husband Accused In Dunstable Road Crash

The following information was supplied by the Westford Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Oct. 15, 9:10 p.m. – Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash on Dunstable Road, finding a sedan facing south in the northbound lane.

The sedan, which was occupied at the time of the crash by a man and a woman, had extensive damage to its front driver’s side door and front wheel assembly. Nearby, an SUV facing north in the northbound lane had similar damage.

While the road was under construction during the time of the crash and there was no yellow dividing line in the area, officers saw yellow reflective markers indicating the center of the road.

Evidence indicated that sedan impacted the SUV, which was corroborated by the SUV driver, who said the man had been driving the vehicle at the time of impact.

This contradicted earlier testimony from the sedan occupants, who appeared unsteady on their feet and glassy eyed according to the officer’s report.

Both occupants of the sedan indicated they had ingested several drinks earlier in the evening, and the man spontaneously tried to prove that the woman, who was his wife, had been driving as he had been in prison just recently.

The SUV driver was confirmed not to have been drinking during the time of the crash.

At this point, the officer told the man from the sedan that he did not believe his story that the woman had been driving, as if she had she would have likely received injuries from an airbag deployment that were not present, whereas he had injuries on his face.

A field sobriety test was issued to the sedan man, which he failed. The man was arrested and according to the officer’s report, the smell of alcohol on his presence ruined the new car smell of the police cruiser where he was placed.

Oct. 21, 7:44 a.m. – The owner of a boat involved in a September incident had another call from police after a fisherman on Forge Pond saw the boat washed ashore on nearby beach.

Police contacted the owner, who said they believed it had been securely fastened across the pond in Littleton, saying someone may have taken it out for a joyride.

The officer on the call requested the man take the boat out of the water to avoid further incidents.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the boat had not been registered since 2009. Town officials told the officer to contact Massachusetts Environmental Police.
