Acton-Boxboro Senior Awarded Young Hero Award

Kristen McCaffrey received the award from the Mass. Dept. of Fire Services' S.A.F.E. program for aiding her brother in leaving a house fire.

On December 17, 2018, Acton's Kristen McCaffrey* received the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services' Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Young Hero Award at the Acton Public Safety Building. This award was presented to her by Acton's Fire Chief Robert Hart. McCaffrey received this honor for having rescued her older brother, Tom, from a devastating house fire at the family's Acton home in October.

McCaffrey, 17, is in an elite group of only 370 recipients of the S.A.F.E Award since the program began in 1995. A senior at Acton-Boxboro Regional High School, McCaffrey is a young woman of diverse interests. She is an accomplished guitarist (both electric and acoustic), pianist, and ukulele player. She participated in a two-week exchange to Spain through her high school earlier this year, and she has gone on mission trips through her church's Youth Ministry program to Alabama and Texas. A tremendous animal lover, the lifelong Acton resident has volunteered at a local dog rescue as well as loving and caring for her family's dog, Jasmine.

McCaffrey plans on studying Spanish and Music in college next year.
