Bubbling Brook Continues to Offer a Cool Treat During the Summer

The Bubbling Brook opened its doors in 1951 and hasn't stopped since. The restaurant and ice cream parlor has been serving the residents of Westwood for 62 years.

“People come in and say they’ve been coming here since they were kids, and they bring their own kids to have the same experience they had when they were younger,” owner Marie Cortas said. The Bubbling Brook really does keep it all in the family. Cortas owns the restaurant with both of her parents, and her fiancée works at the establishment as well. Cortas and her family have owned the restaurant for 11 years.

“It used to be a wind mill,” she explained. “This building is a piece of history in the area and people really love it.”

The Bubbling Brook has been giving the residents of Westwood a place to be with their families, to socialize, and to share some homemade ice cream. The Bubbling Brook offers over 25 flavors of ice cream, from the traditional vanilla and chocolate to chocolate peanut butter, Reese’s peanut butter cup, coffee oreo, maple walnut and black raspberry chip. Their newest flavors are salted caramel pretzel and blue cookie monster, which is very popular with the children, Cortas said. Cones are available along with the hard shell dips like chocolate, peanut butter and cherry.

The Bubbling Brook also offers sherbets and dairy-free sorbets, as well as frozen yogurts. Most of the hard ice creams, Cortas notes, is gluten-free for those with allergies. The Bubbling Brook doesn’t only specialize in hard ice cream, but soft serve as well, that’s lactose-free and gluten-free. Pies, strawberry shortcake, sundaes, brownie sundaes and a Brook Buster sundae (brownie and banana) are also staples on their menu. 

“I enjoy coming here. It’s a happy and fun atmosphere,” Cortas said. “It’s intense in the summer, but it’s a busy and fun place to work.”

Cortas said the Bubbling Brook was one place in Westwood to have picnic tables for people to come and enjoy the weather outside as well as each other’s company. “We’re one of the few places that offer outside seating, there’s not to many places where you can go outside and be together.”

If people aren’t interested in just ice cream, the restaurant cooks up New England summer staples like clam strips, scallops, haddock, clam chowder, as well as burgers, hot dogs, French fries and salads.

Cortas said her family is proud to own the restaurant. “We want to continue making it better and better, and we want to keep up with the tradition of the Bubbling Brook.”
