Commission on the Status of Women to Screen Miss Representation

The Eastern Regional Commission on the Status of Women will host the documentary about women in the media.

Miss Representation, a 2011 Sundance Film Festival Premiere documentary, will be shown by the Eastern Regional Commission on the Status of Women on June 1 from 1-3 at Jubilee Church in Mattapan. This documentary by Jennifer Siebel Newsom discusses the lack of female representation in the media and its correlation to the lack of women in positions of power.

“I made Miss Representation because we live in a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, and the collective message the media send to our young women and men is that a woman’s value lies in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader,” Newsom said. “I wanted to shed a light on this problem, because if we don’t question that thinking and work to change it, we are going to continue to be marginalized.”

The Eastern Regional Commission on the Status of Women will host the screening. It was established by Massachusetts in 2018, per An Act establishing Regional Commissions on the Status of Women. Cities and towns in the catchment area of Eastern Regional Commission on the Status of Women are Avon, Boston, Braintree, Brookline, Canton, Chelsea, Cohasset, Dedham, Foxborough, Holbrook, Hull, Milton, Plainville, Quincy, Randolph, Revere, Sharon, Stoughton, Weymouth, Westwood, and Winthrop.
