Four Internet Safety Tools For You To Stay Safe On The Web
CCleaner, Hide.me, StartPage, and DuckDuckGo are tools you can use to be a better-prepared Internet citizen.

Westwood’s George Mansour, author of the recently-released bestseller “Unhackable: Your Online Security Playbook: Recreating Cyber Security in an Unsecure World,” knows many tools to help people be well-educated computer users. “If you make a conscious decision towards cybersecurity, you make a conscious environment. The conscious decision and conscious environment create true security and privacy.”
The first tool Mansour recommends is CCLeaner. Available for both Windows and Mac, this software cleans your computer. “I sweep every computer with CCleaner before I use it. All websites leave browser cookies on your machine. It is especially important to clean your machine with CCleaner before accessing your bank account or other sites with sensitive data. Once you finish using your computer, run the software again to get rid of cookies. CCLeaner is easy to use in the beginning, which keeps things from being hard later on,” says Mansour.
VPN’s (virtual private networks) are Mansour’s next suggestion. The two VPN’s that he recommends are Hide.me and Hide My Ass. “[VPN’s] are great if you are using a public wifi hotspot to keep your data safe, but you can also use them all the time,” he explains.

The last two tools which he recommends are search engines. He recommends Startpage (who pulls search results from Google) or DuckDuckGo (who compiles results from several search engines including Yahoo! And Bing). Both Startpage and DuckDuckGo can be set as the default search engine in your browser. “Unlike the search engine you might use now, these search engines won’t track you and know your likes and dislikes. They are a change, and look different, but give you more control,” Mansour says.
