How To: Run For Town Office In Westwood, MA

Want to affect change in Westwood? Seeing the results of the midterms get you fired up? Here's how to run!

Have you ever thought about running for office in Westwood? Have you ever been frustrated at filling out a ballot where the person running was unopposed? Here’s how to run for office in the Town of Westwood election which will occur on April 30, 2019.

Step 1: Pick up nomination papers in the Town Clerk’s office between January 15 and March 8.
Step 2: Fill them out, get signatures as needed, and submit them by March 12.

  • Housing Authority: Two open seats, one with a two-year term (vacancy) and one with a five year term. Deals with “The board shall be responsible for exploring various financing alternatives for the development of affordable rental housing units, identify sites for redevelopment of affordable rental units, develop and manage affordable rental housing owned and operated by the Westwood Housing Authority and the [Westwood Affordable Housing Associates, Inc.].” If Westwood’s affordable housing is a concern for you, here’s a way for you to affect change!
  • Selectman: One seat, three-year term. “The board shall have the power to establish, in the performance of its duties, rules and regulations not otherwise governed by the General Laws, town charter (3-1-1-3-6-1) and town by-laws.”
  • Planning Board: Two open seats, both with three-year terms. “The board shall meet regularly and shall maintain a public record of its proceedings, resolutions and determinations. It shall be responsible for the general, physical, economic and environmental planning of the town under the general laws, town charter (4-4-1, 4-4-2) and town by-laws.” Environmental issues or town planning important to you? Here’s your position.
  • Moderator: One open seat, one year term whose job it is to “preside at town meeting.”
  • School Committee: Two open seats, both with three-year terms. If you want a huge way to have input into the education of Westwood’s youth, here’s your position!
  • Library Trustee: Two open seats, both with three-year terms. If library programming and access is important to you, consider running for one of these seats!
  • Board of Assessors: One open seat with a three-year term. Deals with taxes.
  • Sewer Commission: One open seat with a three-year term.
