Sixth-grader Devin and fourth-grader Joselyn Knox, of Phillips Brook Road in Westwood, spent their time during COVID being entrepreneurial and altruistic. The siblings founded “Volcanic Vanilla Extract” to “...help people during this difficult time, make something we enjoy and try running a little business project. Finding a project was tougher than we expected. We want to keep everyone safe. A lemonade stand sure won’t work. One thing we make every year for friends and family is vanilla extract. Over the past four years we’ve gotten good at it. We realized that is what we can do. Instead of making 10 bottles this year, we made 50 bottles and hope to sell them to help families and seniors who may not be able to afford enough food this winter.”

Devin and Jocelyn reached their goal of selling fifty bottles of Volcanic Vanilla Extract. In doing so, they raised $1085 for the Westwood Food Pantry. The bottles were sold to their family, friends, and neighbors.

Made by “parent-supervised, 100% genuine child labor” Volcanic Vanilla Extract possessed several qualities that made it so desirable that it sold so quickly. The beans were grade A Madagascar vanilla beans. The four-ounce bottles were amber Boston round glass bottles, designed to keep light out of the product. Triple-distilled corn alcohol extracted the vanilla.
