Westwood Cultural Council Is Looking for Grant Applicants

Grant applications are due October 15 on Mass Cultural Council website.

Westwood Cultural Council (WCC) is currently seeking applications for grants. The grant deadline is coming up extremely soon on October 15-so hurry! Applications must be submitted on the Massachusetts Cultural Council website.

In 2018, projects funded by the Westwood Cultural Council included Deerfield School’s Parent Teacher Organization’s (PTO) request for Tony Vacca World Music Workshops, Sheehan Elementary School’s Friendship Tree Cultural Program, and Martha Jones School’s PTO’s request for a “Native Pride Dancer.” Other grants included Pop Up Art School, Tommy Rull’s A Musical Journey Through The Years, and Tricia Perry’s The Celtic Harp: Magic and Legend.

When asked what an ideal program that Westwood Cultural Council would like to fund would be, WCC Secretary Nancy Donahue replied “I like to fund grants that benefit Westwood residents. Schools are a high priority. I also think that library events are a high priority because they are enjoyed by a wide audience of [Westwood] residents. An example of an ideal program that we funded last year was the Westwood Winds Community Band. The band performs two free concerts a year in Westwood. The band is comprised of musicians who are [Westwood] residents. Recently, they performed at Westwood Day.”

“The application should provide a comprehensive description of the event to be funded. It should describe the intended audience. It should include how the grant is relevant to the local history and culture,” Donahue said, describing what a great WCC grant application would look like.

In 2015, the WCC stated that its funding priorities included “Community wide gatherings that celebrate local history and cultural diversity; Schools programs to promote art education and field trips; and Programs for residents ages 30-60 without a parenting theme In the next two years, seniors without services and students affected by budget constraints, due to decreasing enrollment, will require supplementary programs.” Donahue stated that “I am happy with the programs the the WW Cultural Council has sponsored. I think our organization achieves the goals as defined by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.”
