Westwood Native’s Golf Tournament to Celebrate 10th Anniversary

"The Mike" benefits The New England Center for Children, a private, nonprofit autism research and education center.

On August 27, “The Mike” golf invitational will be taking place for its 10th year. “The Mike” is hosted by Westwood native and Westwood High School alum Michael McKenna, who presently lives in Norton. McKenna’s autistic eldest son, who has been a student at The New England Center for Children (NECC) for twelve years, is the tournament's namesake.

“It’s more than a golf tournament,” McKenna was recently quoted as saying in NECC’s Acts of Generosity newsletter. “[It] gives a face to autism. I started with a smaller corporate event to introduce NECC to my business circles, and it was so well received I brought the idea for the golf event to Cathy Welch (NECC’s Executive Director) and she said go for it.”

McKenna’s wife, Lori, and their other children Emily, 18, and Matt, 14, have all run the Falmouth Road Race to raise money for NECC. Per Acts of Generosity, they’ve raised $15,000 through the Falmouth Road Race. Lori also volunteers at NECC’s staff and teacher appreciation nights.
