Westwood Town Meeting Warrants To Close On January 7

Want to affect change in Westwood? Have something you don't like? Here's a way to fix it!

The Town of Westwood announced that the Town Meeting Warrant will open at its meeting on January 7. To quote the town’s announcement, “Articles can be submitted by town boards, commissions and committees, employees, developers, land and business owners and residents. Residents interested in submitting an article for the 2019 Annual Town Meeting Warrant, should begin working on the submission.”

In other words, if you as a Westwood resident are interested in having Westwood celebrate indigenous People’s Day, fly a Pride flag during June, or have a Board of Selectpeople as opposed to Selectmen, this is your chance to get the wheels in motion to do that. Ten registered Westwood voters must sign off on your Warrant, and no language can be changed on any resident’s Warrant (Warrants submitted by boards, commissions, and committees and staff may have their language changed). The town, therefore, suggests that residents have their Warrant reviewed by “Town Counsel, the Board of Selectmen and/ or the Finance and Warrant Commission before collecting signatures to ensure the wording of the submitted petition article can accomplish the desired goal and be acted upon by vote of town meeting.”

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a great website with a Citizen’s Guide to Town Meeting law. Westwood’s town meeting is May 6, 2019, and all registered voters in Westwood may participate and vote.
