Westwood’s first-ever gala celebrating Eid-al-Fitr will be held at the Westwood Public Library on June 5 from 6pm-8pm. The gala will feature “authentic food, sweets, henna, crafts, and gifts.” Organizer Ambreen Hasan has lived in Westwood for eight years and reports that she has never known of a celebration of this holiday.

Eid-al-Fitr marks the end of the month of Ramadan for Muslims. It is the “biggest [muslim] holiday, akin to Christmas or Chanukah,” explains Hasan. Adult Muslims fast from food and drink from dawn to dusk during Ramadan, and are encouraged to pray and perform acts of charity. Hasan reports that she has reached out to Westwood elementary school principals to offer to speak about Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr there. She will be speaking at Deerfield Elementary, where her two children attend, about topics such as why they fast and their core values. “My daughters get asked about it,” says Hasan.

The Eid-al-Fitr gala will be at the main branch of the Westwood Public Library on June 5 from 6pm-8pm. RVSP via email at westwoodia2019@gmail.com, although walk-ins are also welcome.
