WHS Senior Chloe Goodman Creates Indie Album For Her SIPP

Chlchlochloe's music is on many streaming services, including Apple Music and Spotify.

When Westwood High School (WHS) senior Chloe Goodman chose a project for her Senior Independent Project Program (SIPP), she drew on her experiences from the previous summer. “In summer 2018 I spent a lot of time writing songs because of how anxious I felt. I had a lot of anxietie(s) about different things and it seemed like writing down how I felt with a couple chords and melodies and harmonies could make me feel a lot better, which it did. When I had my first day of SIPP (Senior Independent Project Program) of senior year, I knew a mini album would be a cool and interesting learning experience for me because I never really knew that much about the process of making an album. Now that I've gotten into it, I find it incredible how every little detail matters when you're making [an album].” Songs from Goodman’s album are streaming on CD Baby, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Apple Music, all under her stage name of Chlchlochloe.

Goodman seeks more ears to listen to her music. CD Baby likens her work to Carlisle, MA native Clairo, Lily Allen, and Mitski, although her single NB(D) has shades of Oh Wonder. “... In December, SIPP students were required to have their own individual Feedback Panel as a reflection of what they've been working on so far, and to get feedback from the panelists that would attend their panel. Some things that the panelists and I discussed, was how to publicize. I already got some information out there already, like advertising on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, but I figured I needed something more. College radio stations seemed like a good and rational idea to me because they're always looking for new things and spontaneity. I remember going on a college tour of Emerson College, and when we got to the tour guide showing us the radio studio [WERS], she said that Emerson's radio station is open to creativity and new content...My age group and college students specifically also have a really diverse and unique music tastes, so finding new artists and new music is always fun and really nice to find. Hearing a new song for the first time can really impact someone!” Goodman hopes getting her work on the radio will get her more streams and more ears listening to her music.

Goodman’s name may ring a bell as she has been active in Westwood High School’s Performing Arts Department throughout her high school career. She was most recently Julia in 1984. “I love writing songs and music and singing, but I plan to major in Musical Theatre in college. However, I'm definitely not going to give up songwriting in general. It's a great coping mechanism for me,” she says. One of the earliest pieces on her Soundcloud is a cover of “She Used to be Mine,” from Sara Bareilles’ musical Waitress.

“I got assigned a mentor for my project, my singing teacher, Barbara Arboleda. Barbara and I made an outline of our plans and what we want to do for the album which includes finalizing the 3 songs for the album, arranging the song, finalizing instrumental tracks, recording final vocals, mixing & mastering the songs, copyrighting, and then releasing the album! It's a lengthy process, but it's worth it. As for my 3 songs I've released on Spotify & other platforms, I've done completely on my own using GarageBand. I also have a keyboard I hook up to my Macbook and play on that, and then some settings on GarageBand allow me to change settings on the keyboard, so if I want some guitar in a track I can get guitar, or if I want drums I can get drums,” explains Goodman. Chlchlochloe’s three songs are “B.S.”, “Can You Hear Me?”, and “NB(D).”

Goodman speaks highly of her friend and collaborator, Dylan Ventola. “[He] is quite smart with music, and he's been a really good support system for me with my songs/music, and just in general. If I need any extra ideas besides any of my other musical friends or Barbara with what to do with an instrument in my track, or what chord fits with what, he's got it and it's amazing. He's also very honest with me if he likes or dislikes something that I'm doing with a song, and honesty is exactly what I'm looking for.”

Chlchlochloe’s music is on Spotify, Soundcloud, and Apple Music. “I use CD Baby, which is a digital music distribution website that distributes my songs to music platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music...etc. It's not a hard process, but it's not really a fun one or a completely easy one either. It's all about making things are in order and TAKING YOUR TIME when reviewing each step, because the last thing someone wants is to have a messed up part in the song that isn't supposed to be there and you can't change it. When I send my songs over to these music platforms it usually takes about 5 days to about a week for them to get it up on the platform, and once it's up--it's ready to go!”

Goodman’s music can be found under the name of Chlchlochloe on Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music, and CD Baby. Give her music a listen, and then share your hometown musician with your friends on social media.
