New Speed Limit In Weymouth's Columbian Square
Posted speed in Weymouth's Columbian Square is now 20 miles per hour.
WEYMOUTH, MA — Make sure to slow down even slower than usual when driving through Columbian Square. The new posted speed limit in the square is 20 miles per hour.
An electronic sign with the new speed limit and the speed of oncoming drivers has been placed in the square. Weymouth police are advising residents and visitors that traffic enforcement in accordance with the new lower speed limit will be enforced.
The new speed limit comes six days after the town received a $183,000 state grant for traffic improvements to Columbian Square. This grant funding will be matched by approximately $50,000 in town funds that town officials said will provide for the completion of preliminary design plans that will address much needed infrastructure improvements. These improvements will support current and future housing development, particularly that from Union Point.

"Resolving the traffic and intersection issues of Columbian Square have been long overdue," Weymouth Mayor Robert Hedlund said. The funding from this grant program will not just address the issues from a traffic standpoint, but will provide for a more holistic overhaul of the
intersection, taking into account the increased housing development at Union Point as well as bicycle and pedestrian foot traffic."
