The Harold W. Hyland Square plaque once again proudly stands on the corner of Routes 18 and 53 in Weymouth, in honor of a Weymouth native who sacrificed his life during World War I.
Yves Poirier of Quincy Memorials happened upon the plaque in the weeks before Veterans Day, saw that the plaque was in disrepair and wanted to do something to help. He then contacted George Pontes, Weymouth Director of Veterans Services seeking permission to refinish the plaque at no cost.
“It just seemed fitting to clean and refinish this marker to honor a man who was killed in battle for his country,” said Poirier.
Second Lieutenant Harold W. Hyland, for whom the Square was named, was originally from King Street in Weymouth. Son of Thadeus G. Hyland and Emma J. Brumbann Hyland, he was killed in action with Co. F, 127th Regiment 32nd Infantry Division in France on September 1, 2018. 2nd Lieutenant Hyland is interred at Oise-Aisni American Cemetery in Fere-en-Tardenois, France. This is a 365-acre site where there are remains of more than 6000 American war dead, most of whom died in 1918 during World War I. His final resting place is 113 kilometers north of Paris.
Poirier continued, “As Veterans Day approached, we thought it would serve as a good reminder to people in this region that we should pause and reflect on the contributions of those who sacrificed for all of us. We are pleased to be able to do a small part to help restore a piece of history.”
