Weymouth Fire: South Weymouth Naval Air Station Fire 'Suspicious'

Fire roared into the overnight as crews battled flames at two abandoned buildings in the old South Weymouth Naval Air Station.

WEYMOUTH, MA — Weymouth firefighters, and mutual aid, battled a roaring, two-alarm blaze into the overnight Thursday at the old South Weymouth Naval Air Station. The fire destroyed two abandoned buildings near the Union Point development.

Weymouth fire said on Friday the fire is considered "suspicious."

"The joint investigation by Weymouth fire, Weymouth police, and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal is underway," Weymouth fire said. "At this time, the fire is considered suspicious as the building was abandoned with no occupants or utilities."

No one was believed injured in the fire that was called into the Weymouth Fire Department around 8:30 and had crews on scene well into Friday morning putting out hot spots.

The fire went to two alarms Thursday night.

The buildings have both been abandoned for years at the air base that was closed in 1997. It has seen been slowly transformed into residential, recreational and business zones. South Shore Health this week opened one of the first drive-through coronavirus testing center in the Union Point area.

Only patients who have been pre-screened and meet state testing guidelines will be registered and given an appointment at the Union Point location.
