Wemyouth Police Officer Shoots Man Armed With Knife

Officers responding to a domestic dispute on Winter Street fired upon a man who allegedly lunged at them with a knife.

A Weymouth police officer shot a man armed with a knife Friday night after responding to a domestic dispute on Winter Street, police said.

At 11:52 p.m., officers responding to a report of an unwanted person involved in a domestic dispute at 215 Winter St. found William J. Sylvester, 35, in a bedroom armed with a knife, according to a release issued Saturday morning by Capt. Richard M. Fuller Jr.

"Initial indications are that as officers entered the bedroom Sylvester brandished a knife and immediately lunged towards the officers," the release read. "Both officers simultaneously fired upon Sylvester and he was struck in the lower torso. He was taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound."

Sylvester is reportedly homeless and currently has a warrant for violation of parole for failing to register as a sex offender.

He is currently under arrest on the parole violation warrant and is also charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and failure to register as a sex offender.

He is being held without bail.

This incident is currently under investigation by Weymouth Police Detectives and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.
