Weymouth High To Hold 'VIrtual' Graduation Ceremony

Weymouth High will broadcast the ceremony, which will include having names of class of 2020 members read and speeches, on Saturday morning.

WEYMOUTH, MA — A "virtual" graduation will part of the upcoming events celebrating the Weymouth High class of 2020 and its 440 graduates.

While the traditional ceremony was canceled due the coronavirus health emergency, the hope is the "virtual" events will help seniors create some memories unique to their class.

"We are extremely excited to announce that we will be partaking in our long-established traditions even in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple said. "In the midst of all this uncertainty, these events will allow for our students to celebrate their accomplishments like those who have graduated before them."

The graduation will be broadcast at 10 a.m. on Saturday to coincide with what would have been the traditional ceremony. The "virtual" event is scheduled to consist of each graduate's picture and their name read aloud to mimic the awarding of diplomas. There will be traditional graduation addresses and a few "surprises" from the faculty and staff at Weymouth High School.

Viewers can expect to see videos and photos that were taken throughout the past school year incorporated into the virtual ceremony.

Scholarships totaling $135,000 were to be handed out Tuesday during the Scholarship and Award night. That broadcast can also be found at www.weymouth.tv.

"The activities and events are exciting opportunities to celebrate all of our students' accomplishments during these unprecedented times," said Principal Strauss. "We look forward to using these occasions to recognize and celebrate their time as wildcats."

The school is hopeful to have a special occasion for graduates on Aug. 7 on the Weymouth High football field if coronavirus-related restrictions allow at that time. Students will be contacted with further information about that event as it gets closer.
