Weymouth Red Sox? Union Point Makes Move For Paw Sox
Union Point is hoping to bring the minor league baseball team to the South Shore.

WEYMOUTH, MA — Union Point could be the landing point for the Pawtucket Red Sox when their lease in Rhode Island ends.
The development at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Base is one of 18 communities hoping to land the Boston Red Sox's AAA minor league baseball affiliate. Mayor Robert Hedlund told the Weymouth News that the project would not use any state money and would be a positive for the community.
The Paw Sox's lease at McCoy Stadium ends in 2020, with a five-year option possibly extending it to 2025.

Rhode Island officials have spent much time trying to work on a deal for a new stadium in Pawtucket, but last month, Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello called a state senate-approved financing plan for a new stadium dead. That plan called for $85 million in borrowing, with $41 million covered by the team, $26 million by the state, and $18 million by Pawtucket.
The most notable bid for the team has come from Worcester. City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. recently hired two consultants for their discussions about relocation.
